A bit of history

A privileged place for trade and commerce until the 18th century, the fair became a place of celebration in the 19th century. This was the birth of a veritable social phenomenon: the Fête Foraine. At the same time as disseminating the novelties of the industrial age, it offers an escape into a world of freedom and reverie. On the fairground you could find many attractions These include amusing physics, popular science, art museums, wax museums, historical and ethnographic museums, fairground menageries… and various forms of modern entertainment, including boulevard theater, sports entertainment, cabaret, music hall, illusionists and cinema.

At its peak during the “Belle Époque” era, the Fête Foraine was a marvel to behold. Crowds, still unaware of television and the explosion of tourism, discover the sights and sounds of five continents.
