Paris Museum of Modern Art

Inaugurated in 1961, the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris is located on the banks of the Seine, between the Champs-Elysées and the Eiffel Tower, in the east wing of the Palais de Tokyo. In the very heart of this architectural jewel, the museum offers companies the opportunity to organize prestigious receptions. These events are hosted in monumental rooms bathed in natural light, overlooking the forecourt, the Seine and the Eiffel Tower.

French art from the Museum’s point of view

In 1937, the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques offered Paris the opportunity to create two museums, one belonging to the city and the other to the state. The Palais de Tokyo is entrusted to architects Jean-Claude Dondel, André Aubert, Paul Viard and Marcel Dastugue.

The Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris was inaugurated on July 6, 1961.

When it opened, it housed works from the Petit Palais modern art collection, and acquisitions from the fine arts purchasing commission. Over the years, it has been enriched by donations from private collectors such as Ambroise Vollard, Count Emanuele Sarmiento, Mathilde Amos and the collection of Dr. Girardin.

Its collections, comprising over 13,000 works, represent the wealth of artistic creation in the 20th and 21st centuries. This Parisian museum bears witness to the dynamism of the contemporary art scene.

It is positioned as a museum of French art, presenting the major artistic movements since the 20th century. Its artistic influences are illustrated by the presence of major artists from the history of art: Picasso, Dufy, Modigliani, Derain, Picabia, Chagall, Boltanski, Parreno and Peter Doig.

Every year, the museum organizes major exhibitions featuring modern and contemporary art. In recent years, the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris has organized exhibitions of international renown: Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Bernard Buffet and Sonia Delaunay.
